Boehringer Takes Options on Six Preclinical Oncology Programs from Sino Biopharm's Subsidiaries, Worth Up to $7B
- Boehringer Ingelheim and SBP Group signed a second oncology collaboration after their 2024 deal: six preclinical antibody–drug conjugate and T-cell engager programs.
- Boehringer pays $358 million upfront and near-term; SBP is eligible for up to $7 billion in option-exercise and milestone payments plus tiered royalties.
- Five programs come from LaNova, one from Beijing Tide. SBP runs early development, and Boehringer can opt in per asset after undisclosed clinical milestones; four options give rights excluding some Asian countries, two give global rights.
The structure is the story: Boehringer pays to watch SBP fund the risky preclinical-to-clinic step, then chooses asset by asset, so most of the $7 billion is only paid if programs survive. It is the same China-sourcing playbook Pfizer, Merck and others use, with a Shanghai R&D site added a month ago to evaluate assets in-house. Six ADC/TCE shots in one deal also bets that Chinese bispecific and conjugate engineering stays ahead of Western platforms.
